Williamson’s resilient 133 anchored New Zealand’s chase of 267 runs in the fourth innings, guiding them to a comprehensive seven-wicket triumph over the understrength South African side.
This series win marks a significant milestone for the Black Caps, who had previously struggled against South Africa, losing 13 and drawing four out of 17 Test series encounters dating back to 1931.
The 33-year-old Williamson displayed his class with a methodical innings, forming an unbroken partnership of 152 runs with Will Young, who contributed a crucial 60 not out.
Williamson’s century, his seventh in as many Tests, showcased his impeccable form, making him the fastest player in Test history to reach 32 centuries, surpassing Australia’s Steve Smith.
New Zealand seamer Will O’Rourke made an impressive Test debut, claiming nine wickets in the match and earning the man-of-the-match award, while Williamson was rightfully named the player of the series.
Despite early wobbles, with opener Tom Latham and Rachin Ravindra departing cheaply, Young’s resilience and New Zealand’s depth ensured a comfortable victory.
South Africa, fielding a depleted side due to the absence of key players participating in domestic T20 leagues, struggled to make an impact, with offspinner Dane Piedt being the only notable performer.
