In a landmark moment for Irish cricket, Ireland clinched their first-ever Test match triumph by defeating Afghanistan by six wickets in Abu Dhabi, putting an end to a string of seven consecutive defeats.

Skipper Andy Balbirnie showcased his leadership with an unbeaten 58, guiding Ireland to their target of 111 on the third day’s final session.

The victory marked a significant milestone for Ireland, who had faced defeat in their inaugural Test against Pakistan in 2018.

Expressing his elation, Balbirnie remarked, “We’re absolutely excited. We’ve created history. The monkey is off the back and it’s very special to do that.”

Afghanistan, resuming their second innings at 134-3, were eventually bundled out for 218, with Hashmatullah Shahidi top-scoring with 55.

Mark Adair’s stellar performance earned him three wickets, finishing with a total of eight in the match, supported by Craig Young and Barry McCarthy, who also claimed three wickets each.

Despite a shaky start for Ireland at 13-3, Balbirnie’s resilient innings, accompanied by Paul Stirling and Lorcan Tucker’s contributions, steered them to victory.

Reflecting on the match, Shahidi acknowledged Ireland’s strong bowling performance and highlighted the positives for Afghanistan, particularly the debut of Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

Adair expressed his jubilation, emphasizing the challenge of Test cricket and praising Ireland’s bowling unit.

Following the historic Test win, Ireland and Afghanistan are set to compete in a series of one-day internationals and T20 matches as part of their multi-format series.
