The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made a significant decision on Sunday, reinstating Babar Azam as the white-ball captain of the national team in preparation for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, set to take place in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA).

PCB formally announced Babar Azam’s reappointment as captain via their social media platforms. “Babar Azam appointed as white-ball captain,” the PCB declared.

“Upon unanimous recommendation from the PCB’s selection committee, Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi has appointed Babar Azam as the white-ball (ODI and T20I) captain of the Pakistan men’s cricket team.”

Babar Azam’s first challenge in his renewed leadership role will be leading the team in a five-match home T20I series against New Zealand, commencing on April 18 in Rawalpindi.

The talented batsman had previously served as Pakistan’s white-ball captain from 2019 to 2023 before stepping down following the team’s disappointing performance in the ICC World Cup 2023.

Pakistan’s failure to qualify for the semifinals saw them finish fifth in the standings with eight points. Following his resignation, PCB entrusted Shan Masood with Test captaincy, while Shaheen Afridi assumed leadership of the T20I side.

Afridi’s stint as captain began on a challenging note with a five-match away series against New Zealand in January this year.

Pakistan’s 4-1 series defeat prompted scrutiny over Shaheen’s future as captain right from the start of his tenure.
