Injured Conway Forced Out of IPL; CSK Enlist Richard Gleeson in Squad

A thumb fracture incurred during a T20I against Australia in February has ruled out New Zealand and Chennai Super Kings’ wicketkeeper-batter, Devon Conway, from participating in the entire IPL 2024 season. In response, CSK has brought England seamer Richard Gleeson on board as his replacement.

Conway’s injury, sustained during the second T20I against Australia in Auckland, led to surgery and dashed CSK’s hopes of his return in May for the latter part of the IPL. Conway played a pivotal role in CSK’s victory in IPL 2023, amassing 672 runs in 15 innings, with an average of 51.69 and a strike rate of nearly 140. His absence leaves Aravelly Avanish, India’s Under-19 wicketkeeper, as the sole backup to MS Dhoni at CSK.

Gleeson’s inclusion aims to mitigate the void left by Mustafizur Rahman’s absence. Rahman, CSK’s top wicket-taker with ten strikes, has been granted permission by the BCB to play in the IPL until May 1.

At 36, Gleeson’s career gained momentum later in life, debuting professionally at 27 for Northamptonshire. Notably, he marked his international debut for England in 2022 with an impressive performance against India. Gleeson’s T20 experience spans various leagues worldwide, with 90 matches under his belt and 101 wickets to his name, boasting an economy rate of 8.18. Although he’s new to the IPL, Gleeson brings a wealth of T20 experience from leagues like the Hundred, BPL, BBL, SA20, and ILT20.
