News by “Faisal Ghumman”

A commanding Australian squad delivered a stellar all-around performance to clinch their fourth ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup championship, overpowering a strong Indian team in a thrilling final showdown at Willowmoore Park, Benoni on Sunday.

Under the leadership of Hugh Weibgen, Australia showcased exceptional skills in both batting and bowling, first setting a record-breaking total in a U19 Men’s CWC final and then executing a flawless bowling display to dismantle India’s chase and seal a resounding victory by 79 runs.

Reflecting the dominance reminiscent of senior players like Pat Cummins during their tour of India, the young Australian side secured their nation’s first U19 title since Mitch Marsh led the team to victory in 2010.

Despite entering the tournament as defending champions, India fell short in their bid for a consecutive title, succumbing to Australia’s superior performance in what marked their fifth consecutive final appearance in the U19 Men’s CWC.

Australia’s Commanding Batting Display

Australia, having won the toss under cloudy skies, opted to bat first and got off to a fiery start. Harry Dixon, reminiscent of David Warner, set an aggressive tone to the innings by smashing Naman Tiwari for two fours and a six in the second over.

Raj Limbani provided the first breakthrough for India with a brilliant inswinger that breached Sam Konstas’ defense.

India introduced Saumy Pandey early in hopes of exploiting any vulnerability Hugh Weibgen might have had against left-arm spin. However, the partnership between Weibgen and Dixon flourished, frustrating the Indian bowlers.

Although the introduction of spin momentarily slowed the scoring rate, it failed to yield wickets. Consequently, India reverted to pace, which proved fruitful as Tiwari dismissed both Weibgen and Dixon in quick succession.

Despite these setbacks, Harjas Singh rose to the occasion with a crucial half-century, anchoring the Australian innings alongside Ryan Hicks.

India’s Struggle in Chase

Facing a daunting target against Australia’s formidable pace attack, India found themselves in trouble early on, losing wickets at regular intervals.

Although Adarsh Singh showed resilience with a patient innings, India’s batting order crumbled under pressure. Despite late resistance from Murugan Abhishek, India fell short of the target.

Post-match Reflections

Australian skipper Hugh Weibgen praised his team’s effort, especially the pace bowlers, while acknowledging India’s strength as a side. Indian captain Uday Saharan commended his team’s fighting spirit but acknowledged the need for improvement in execution.

Conclusion

Australia’s emphatic victory in the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup final showcased their prowess as a cricketing nation, while India’s valiant effort highlighted the competitive spirit of the tournament.
