Sri Lanka’s emerging batting sensation, Kamindu Mendis, has matched a long-standing Test record set by Pakistan’s cricketing legend, Javed Miandad, with a remarkable display of talent in the recent game.

At just 25 years old, Mendis has amassed 419 runs in his first four Test innings, equaling the achievement of Javed Miandad from 1976.

Mendis debuted in Test cricket against Australia in Galle in 2022, making a solid start with 61 runs in the first inning. However, he didn’t have to bat again as Sri Lanka secured a convincing victory by an innings and 39 runs.

His standout performances came in the second Test of his career against Bangladesh at Sylhet, where he smashed impressive scores of 102 and 164. Unfortunately, he narrowly missed out on a third consecutive century, ending with an unbeaten 92 in the fourth inning due to lack of support from the other end.

Although Mendis missed the chance to match Mohammad Azharuddin’s record for the most centuries after four Test innings, falling short in the fourth inning due to a partner dearth, his overall tally of 419 runs equals that of Javed Miandad.

While Mendis showcased exceptional form throughout the series against Bangladesh, his lone failure came in the second inning of the second Test, where he managed only nine runs.

Javed Miandad, the former captain and batting maestro of Pakistan, had also accumulated 419 runs in his first four Test innings. His innings comprised scores of 163, 25 not out, 25, and 206, setting a benchmark that Mendis has now equaled.
