Bangladesh made a significant change on Wednesday by introducing batter Towhid Hridoy to the Test squad, replacing the injured Mushfiqur Rahim for the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka, commencing on Friday in Sylhet.

Batting stalwart Mushfiqur Rahim was ruled out of the series due to a thumb injury sustained during the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka in Chittagong on Monday.

The 36-year-old wicketkeeper was struck by a delivery from Taskin Ahmed in the second over but continued to keep wickets after receiving treatment from the team physio, managing to secure four crucial catches.

He later contributed an unbeaten 37-run innings, aiding Bangladesh in chasing down 236 runs to secure the ODI series 2-1. Rahim emerged as the second-highest run-scorer for Bangladesh in the ODI series, amassing 135 runs from three innings.

Towhid Hridoy, who has featured in 30 ODIs and 14 T20Is but is yet to debut in Test cricket, has been given the opportunity to step in. The former Under-19 World Cup winner boasts an impressive average of 48.05 after 14 first-class matches.

Despite losing the T20I series against Sri Lanka 2-1, Bangladesh bounced back convincingly to claim victory in the ODI series by the same margin.

The second Test, an integral part of the 2023–25 ICC World Test Championship cycle, is scheduled to commence in Chittagong on March 30.

Bangladesh Test squad comprises Najmul Hossain Shanto (capt), Zakir Hasan, Mahmudul Hasan, Shadman Islam, Liton Das, Mominul Haque, Towhid Hridoy, Shahadat Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nayeem Hasan, Taijul Islam, Shoriful Islam, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Mushfik Hasan, and Nahid Rana.
