US President Donald Trump has strongly defended FIFA President Gianni Infantino, saying it would be a “terrible mistake” to replace him.
Infantino is facing renewed pressure after three major football confederations — UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC — accused him of breaking trust and using deceptive tactics.
The criticism comes as Infantino faces questions over his leadership of world football, including an unsuccessful attempt to sell part of the World Cup to private investors.
Despite the growing backlash, Trump has publicly backed the FIFA president.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump described Infantino as “fantastic” and praised his leadership, saying he had overseen the most successful World Cup ever.
Trump also warned that if Infantino were removed, the World Cup would never be as successful or profitable again.
The relationship between the two has also been highlighted by Infantino’s decision last year to present Trump with a FIFA Peace Prize during the World Cup draw ceremony.
Trump also attended last month’s World Cup final alongside Infantino.
With UEFA, CONCACAF and the AFC now openly challenging FIFA’s leadership, the pressure on Infantino is growing.
The key question now is whether he can maintain his position despite the criticism from some of football’s most powerful confederations.
