Germany recorded their first victory under new head coach Jurgen Klopp on Thursday, defeating Serbia 2-0 in the Nations League. Meanwhile, Portugal secured a 4-2 win over Denmark despite the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, while the Netherlands fought back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Greece.
Germany End Winless Run Under Klopp
Klopp made significant changes to Germany’s starting lineup, selecting an entirely different XI from the team that suffered defeat against Greece in their previous match. Goalkeeper Jonas Urbig and winger Derry Scherhant also made their international debuts.
Germany dominated proceedings but had to wait until the 39th minute to break the deadlock. Florian Wirtz provided the assist for Tom Bischof, who scored his first senior international goal in just his second appearance.
After Nick Woltemade missed a major opportunity, Wirtz doubled Germany’s advantage shortly after the hour mark with a composed finish from outside the penalty area.
The victory marked Klopp’s first win in three matches since returning to management. The German coach expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, saying it should become the standard for future matches.
Netherlands Complete Late Comeback Against Greece
Greece appeared close to securing their third consecutive victory after taking a 2-0 lead against the Netherlands.
Fotis Ioannidis and Georgios Masouras scored in the first half to put the hosts in control. However, Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk reduced the deficit shortly before the hour mark.
The visitors continued their attacking efforts and finally secured an equaliser in the 89th minute through Tijjani Reijnders, earning a valuable point.
Portugal Shine Without Ronaldo
Portugal demonstrated their attacking strength by defeating Denmark 4-2 in their first match since Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the squad raised questions about his international future.
Joao Cancelo opened the scoring, followed by a goal from Goncalo Ramos. Denmark responded on both occasions through Mikkel Damsgaard and Rasmus Hojlund to keep the contest level.
Portugal eventually regained control when Vitinha scored in the 67th minute. Joao Felix added a fourth goal late in the match to complete the victory.
The result maintained Portugal’s perfect record in League A Group 4, giving them nine points from three matches and a six-point advantage at the top of the standings.
Wales Claim First Points as Ireland Draw with Austria
Wales earned their first points of the campaign after defeating Norway 2-1. Dan James and Neco Williams found the net for the Welsh side, while Norway’s task became more difficult after being reduced to 10 players.
Elsewhere in League B, Ireland’s encounter with Austria in Dublin was briefly interrupted after tennis balls were thrown onto the pitch in protest against Ireland’s previous fixture against Israel.
The match resumed shortly afterwards, ending in a 2-2 draw. Troy Parrott scored twice for Ireland, but his efforts were not enough to secure all three points.
Ireland will next face Israel in a designated home fixture in neutral Serbia, which will be played behind closed doors.
