The United States secured a memorable 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday to book their place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Despite finishing the match with 10 men following Folarin Balogun’s dismissal, the tournament co-hosts produced a determined display to claim only their second-ever World Cup knockout-stage win and their first in nearly 25 years.
The victory sets up an exciting last-16 encounter against Belgium in Seattle on Monday, with the Americans keeping their dream of a home-soil World Cup run alive.

Playing in front of a passionate crowd in California, the United States gradually took control after Bosnia made the brighter start. The visitors created the first meaningful opportunities, with veteran captain Edin Dzeko setting up Ermedin Demirovic, whose effort was comfortably saved by goalkeeper Matt Freese.
Freese was called into action again moments later, producing another important stop from a dangerous corner as Bosnia looked to capitalize on their early momentum.
The Americans responded well and began to create chances of their own. Balogun appealed for a penalty after a challenge from Amar Dedic, but the referee waved away the claims. Shortly afterward, the striker thought he had opened the scoring after latching onto a pass from Weston McKennie, only for the offside flag to deny him.
However, Balogun finally broke the deadlock just before halftime.
Tim Ream intercepted a Bosnian goal kick before quickly releasing Malik Tillman, whose pass deflected kindly into Balogun’s path. The striker kept his composure and calmly slotted the ball beneath the advancing goalkeeper to send the home supporters into celebration.
The United States nearly doubled their advantage before the interval when Tyler Adams initiated another attack, eventually finding Balogun inside the box. His close-range effort struck the crossbar and flew over.
Bosnia made significant tactical changes after halftime, with captain Edin Dzeko forced off through injury and coach Sergej Barbarez introducing fresh attacking options.
The match took another dramatic turn in the 64th minute when Balogun was shown a straight red card following a VAR review. The referee ruled that the American striker had stamped on the foot of Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic during an off-the-ball incident, leaving the hosts to play the remainder of the match with 10 men.
Sensing an opportunity, Bosnia increased the pressure but failed to make the extra man count. Demirovic squandered their best chance by firing directly at Freese from a promising position.
Recognizing the importance of the moment, USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino gathered his players during the hydration break, urging his side to stay compact and maintain their discipline for the closing stages.
Although the United States were forced onto the defensive for much of the second half, they continued to threaten on the counterattack. Christian Pulisic briefly found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The decisive moment arrived in the 82nd minute when the Americans earned a free kick just outside the Bosnian penalty area following a foul on Sergino Dest.
Tillman stepped up and curled a superb effort over the wall and beyond goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, whose fingertips were unable to keep the ball out, doubling the USA’s advantage.
Bosnia continued to push forward during 10 minutes of added time and came close through substitute Ermin Mahmic, whose effort flashed narrowly wide of the post.
However, the Americans held firm to secure a clean sheet and a landmark victory.
As the final whistle blew, chants of “USA” echoed throughout the packed stadium, while fans celebrated by singing “Take Me Home, Country Roads,” marking another unforgettable chapter in the nation’s World Cup history as the co-hosts advanced to the Round of 16.
