LAHORE: In the wake of Pakistan’s disappointing campaign at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, former elite umpire Aleem Dar has stepped down from his role as a member of the national selection committee.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the 57 year-old decided to resign following Pakistan’s early exit from the tournament. Dar had been appointed to the selection panel on October 11, 2024, alongside former pacer Aaqib Javed, ex Test captain Azhar Ali and analyst Hasan Cheema.

The development comes amid sweeping repercussions after Pakistan failed to reach the semi-finals, with their journey ending in the Super Eights stage.

Earlier, reports emerged that the Pakistan Cricket Board had imposed a fine of Rs5 million on each player following the underwhelming performance. Sources indicated that the board has made it clear that future financial incentives will be strictly linked to on-field results.

Pakistan’s final match saw them edge past Sri Lanka national cricket team by five runs. However, the victory was not enough to secure qualification, as New Zealand national cricket team progressed to the semi-finals on the basis of a superior net run rate.

During the group stage, Pakistan won three of their four matches. They began with an unconvincing victory over the Netherlands and followed it up with a commanding win against the USA. However, a heavy 61 run defeat to arch rivals India dented their momentum.

Although they managed to defeat Namibia to reach the Super Eights, a washout against New Zealand and a subsequent loss to England ultimately derailed their semi-final aspirations.

With Dar’s resignation and strict disciplinary measures now in place, Pakistan cricket faces a period of introspection and potential restructuring following another major tournament setback.
