ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday reaffirmed Pakistan’s decision to boycott its ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 fixture against India, scheduled for February 15, maintaining that politics must not be allowed to interfere with sport.

Addressing a meeting of the federal cabinet, the prime minister endorsed the government’s stance on preventing the national team from taking the field against their arch rivals. He described the move as a “carefully deliberated and appropriate decision,” taken in response to what he termed the increasing politicization of cricket.

“We have taken a clear stand regarding the T20 World Cup that we will not play the match against India,” Sharif said, emphasising that sporting events should remain free from political influence.

He added that the decision was reached after extensive consultations at the highest levels of government.

The prime minister also voiced support for Bangladesh amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the tournament’s arrangements.

Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland in the 20 team T20 World Cup after requesting that their matches be shifted from India to Sri Lanka over security concerns a move that was ultimately rejected by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

According to government sources, the development played a significant role in Islamabad reassessing its participation in the global event. Pakistani officials have reportedly viewed the ICC’s handling of the situation as biased, further eroding confidence in the sport’s governing body.

The controversy deepened after Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was released by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, reportedly following directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

The decision, along with the ICC’s subsequent stance on Bangladesh’s participation, has been perceived by Pakistani authorities as politically influenced, adding to tensions surrounding the tournament.
