BULAWAYO: Pakistan have been dealt a significant setback ahead of their all important clash against India in the ICC U19 World Cup 2026, with wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Shayan ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.

The 18-year-old sustained a fractured nose after being struck while keeping wickets to a fast bowler during a scenario-based practice match. He was immediately taken to hospital, where X-rays confirmed the injury. Pakistan team management confirmed that Shayan, a top-order batter, will be replaced, with the name of his substitute to be announced in due course.

The injury comes at a crucial time, with Pakistan set to face arch-rivals India on Sunday, February 1, in what has effectively become a virtual knockout encounter for a place in the U19 World Cup semi-finals.

While fans are already dreaming of a potential Pakistan–India final, the reality remains complicated. Both teams qualifying from Super Six Group 2 is unlikely, though still mathematically possible, and largely depends on the outcome of the ongoing England vs New Zealand fixture.

England currently top the Super Six group with an unbeaten record of three wins from three matches, including carry-forward victories against Pakistan and Zimbabwe from the group stage. A win over New Zealand would take England to eight points, sealing a semi-final berth and leaving just one spot up for grabs between Pakistan and India.

However, if New Zealand manage to spring a surprise and defeat England, the equation changes dramatically. In that scenario, a Pakistan win over India would result in a three-way tie on six points, with Net Run Rate (NRR) determining the two teams that progress to the semi-finals.

At present, England boast an NRR of 1.989, while Pakistan sit at 1.484 and India lead the charts with a formidable 3.337. Pakistan can significantly boost their NRR with a dominant victory over India, potentially leapfrogging England and booking a semi-final spot alongside their arch rivals.

If England win, Pakistan’s task becomes even tougher. They would not only need to beat India but do so by a massive margin to overhaul India’s superior NRR.

Currently, India hold the advantage with six points and a healthier run rate. While the gap may appear daunting, it is not entirely out of reach.

If Pakistan bat first and post a total of 300, they would need to secure a win by at least 85 runs to surpass India’s NRR. Alternatively, if Pakistan bowl first and restrict India to 200, they would need to chase the target in approximately 31.5 overs. For a target of 251, Pakistan would have to complete the chase in around 33.2 overs to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
