Ranchi: Virat Kohli added another glorious chapter to his illustrious career on Sunday, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record during the first ODI against South Africa at the JSCA International Stadium Complex.

Kohli delivered a masterful innings, scoring 135 runs off 120 balls, including 11 fours and seven sixes, marking his 52nd ODI century. This remarkable feat allowed him to surpass Tendulkar’s record of 51 centuries in a single format, cementing his legacy as one of cricket’s all-time greats.
The milestone came in the 38th over of India’s innings. Kohli eventually departed while attempting a lofted stroke, but not before showcasing yet another display of batting brilliance.
This incredible century adds to a phenomenal year for Kohli, who earlier became the fastest batter to reach 14,000 ODI runs, achieving the record in just 287 innings—well ahead of his peers.
Kohli’s innings anchored a dominant Indian batting performance, complemented by half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, propelling India to a formidable total of 349/8 in 50 overs.
South Africa fought hard in response but fell short in a thrilling contest, finishing at 332 all out in 49.2 overs. Kuldeep Yadav starred with the ball, claiming four vital wickets that helped India seal a memorable victory.
Kohli’s record-breaking knock will be remembered as yet another testament to his extraordinary consistency and hunger for runs in world cricket.
