The upcoming India vs Australia ODI series, beginning on October 19, is set to usher in a new chapter in Indian cricket. For the first time, Shubman Gill will lead India as the team’s new ODI captain, marking the start of a generational shift at the top.

Even though Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli remain part of the squad, many see this series as symbolic — a handover moment between India’s past and its promising future. Both stalwarts joined the national camp for the first time since the 2025 Champions Trophy, making their return a major talking point as the team departed for Australia on Wednesday.

Before the flight, fans witnessed a heartwarming moment when Rohit greeted the young skipper with his trademark smile. “Arre Gill! Kya haal hai, file?” (How are you, brother!) Rohit said, as cameras captured the camaraderie between India’s former and new ODI captains — a symbolic exchange between two eras.

The Indian contingent, led by Gill, was spotted at the Delhi airport, featuring familiar faces such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, Harshit Rana, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Prasidh Krishna.

India’s tour will include three ODIs and five T20Is, with the ODI leg kicking off at Optus Stadium, Perth, on October 19. The second and third matches are scheduled for October 23 and 25, followed by the T20 series from October 29 to November 8.

The first ODI will also mark the return of Rohit and Kohli to international cricket for the first time since the Champions Trophy triumph — a tournament that ended in fairy-tale fashion for India. Rohit was named Player of the Match in the final for his match-winning 76 off 83 balls, capping off a dominant campaign.

Since then, both veterans have stepped away from Tests and T20Is, transforming into one-format specialists as they look to guide the next generation. Rohit, who has now relinquished his captaincy role, will feature purely as a batter.

Earlier this month, chief selector Ajit Agarkar confirmed that he personally spoke to Rohit before the captaincy decision was made, officially handing over the reins to Shubman Gill. The move, Agarkar noted, was made with an eye on the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, signaling a long-term vision for Indian cricket.

As India prepare to take on Australia, the focus isn’t just on the matches ahead — it’s on the changing of the guard. With Gill at the helm and the old guard still in the mix, this tour promises to blend legacy with new ambition — a rare moment where one generation passes the torch to another.
