Injury Blow: New Zealand’s Will O’Rourke Out of Action for 3 Months

New Zealand cricket is facing a major setback as multiple key players have been ruled out with injuries just weeks before the start of their crucial home season. With series lined up against Australia, England, and West Indies, the Black Caps’ squad depth will be tested like never before.

Rising fast bowler Will O’Rourke has been ruled out for at least three months after suffering a stress fracture in his lower back during the first Test against Zimbabwe. The 24-year-old returned home after the injury, where scans confirmed the severity of the problem.

Head coach Rob Walter said:
“We’re really feeling for Will at the moment and wishing him a speedy recovery.”

O’Rourke’s injury means he will miss the T20I series against Australia (October), the limited-overs series against England (late October), and the white-ball games against West Indies (November). If his recovery goes as planned, he could return for the three-Test series against West Indies in December 2025.

Amidst the injury crisis, there is some relief for New Zealand fans. Pace bowler Ben Sears has recovered from a side strain and is now available for selection. His return will provide much-needed firepower to the bowling attack, especially in the absence of O’Rourke. The injury crisis in New Zealand cricket (2025) could not have come at a worse time. With back-to-back high-profile series against Australia, England, and West Indies, the team will rely on its bench strength and younger players to step up. If the Black Caps can manage their workload carefully and see senior players return in time, they still have a chance to compete strongly this summer.
