COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced a formidable 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, slated to be held in the United States of America (USA) and the West Indies.

The squad comprises a mix of seasoned campaigners and budding talents and will be captained by star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga, with middle-order batsman Charith Asalanka serving as his deputy.

Sri Lanka has chosen to bank on the experience of veteran Angelo Mathews, who returned to T20I cricket in January after a hiatus of nearly three years.

This will mark Mathews’ sixth appearance in the T20 World Cup, having been part of Sri Lanka’s victorious campaign in 2014.

In addition to experience, Sri Lanka has focused on team balance, selecting multiple all-rounders for the T20 World Cup 2024. Skipper Hasaranga leads the spin-bowling all-rounders alongside Dunith Wellalage, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Kamindu Mendis, while Mathews and Dasun Shanaka provide pace-bowling all-round options.

Right-arm speedster Dushmantha Chameera will lead Sri Lanka’s pace attack, supported by Dilshan Madushanka, Matheesha Pathirana, and Nuwan Thushara.

Sri Lanka is placed in Group D of the T20 World Cup 2024 alongside South Africa, Bangladesh, Netherlands, and Nepal.

The former champions will commence their campaign on June 3 against South Africa in New York.
