Ramiz Raja Reveals Pakistan's Opening Pair for 2024 T20 World Cup

The esteemed tournament is scheduled to unfold across venues in the USA and the West Indies this June.

During a discussion on his YouTube channel, Ramiz Raja shared his insights following Pakistan’s lackluster T20I series against New Zealand, where newcomer Saim Ayub faced challenges in the opening slot. Emphasizing the importance of a consistent and seasoned opening partnership, Ramiz highlighted the difficulties arising from frequent adjustments in players’ techniques.

“I still believe that the Pakistan team holds many solutions; the series hasn’t offered solutions or resolutions but rather brought forth existing challenges,” Ramiz remarked.

“Our opening combination remains unsettled; he [Saim Ayub] experiments with his technique in the initial matches, and if unsuccessful, he tries altering it in the subsequent ones, further complicating matters for himself. Confidence comes with success. Babar faced similar challenges in his early years; he possessed talent but lacked confidence and experience,” he elaborated.

As per the former PCB chairman, reverting to the tried-and-tested pair of Babar and Rizwan could furnish Pakistan with the stability and dependability they require at the start of their innings. “Pakistan should opt for Babar and Rizwan as openers. I believe it’s their best option. The Pakistan team should utilize their current talent optimally, employing combinations that foster partnerships and see matches through. Babar and Rizwan opening is a reliable choice, tried and tested. Presently, Pakistan loses early wickets which disrupt momentum,” he concluded.

It’s noteworthy that the upcoming mega-event will kick off on 2 June, with co-hosts USA facing neighbors Canada in the opening match, while fellow hosts the West Indies will encounter Papua New Guinea in Guyana on the second day of group stage matches.

Three venues in the USA and six in the Caribbean will host the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, with the groups and fixtures for the ninth edition of the 20-over spectacle confirmed on Friday, January 5.

Ten out of the 20 teams will play their debut match of the 29-day tournament in the USA, with 16 games scheduled in Lauderhill, Dallas, and New York, with the much-anticipated clash between India and Pakistan set for the new Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in Long Island on 9 June.
