News by Sana Ullah

In a strategic move ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season nine, Quetta Gladiators have opted for a change in leadership, with owner Nadeem Omer confirming the removal of Sarfaraz Ahmed as captain.

“Sarfaraz has expressed a desire to step away from captaincy, especially with new head coach Shane Watson now on board. Watson will be consulting with the team management to determine the new captain,” stated Nadeem.

According to reports, the contenders to fill the captaincy role are South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw and Pakistan’s middle-order batter Saud Shakeel. The official announcement is anticipated in the coming days.

Under Sarfaraz’s leadership, Quetta Gladiators reached three finals, claiming the title in 2019, marking a significant chapter in the team’s history.

Nadeem expressed his satisfaction with Watson’s return as coach and expressed hopes to also secure Kevin Pietersen’s involvement with the team.

“The Quetta Gladiators family is reuniting, with Pietersen being a welcome addition in some capacity,” Nadeem remarked.

The PSL 9 squad for Quetta Gladiators includes notable names like Rilee Rossouw, Mohammad Wasim, Jason Roy, and Wanindu Hasaranga. The tournament will span four cities — Karachi, Lahore, Multan, and Rawalpindi — with the final set to take place at Karachi’s National Bank Stadium on March 18.

Similar to previous editions, PSL 9 will be conducted in two legs, with matches initially hosted at Multan Cricket Stadium and Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium from February 17 to 27. Subsequently, Rawalpindi’s Pindi Cricket Stadium and Karachi’s National Bank Stadium will host matches from February 28 to March 12, followed by the playoffs in Karachi.
