The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named Gary Kirsten from South Africa and Jason Gillespie from Australia as the head coaches for the men’s national cricket team. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi revealed the appointments at a press conference held in Lahore on Sunday.

Kirsten will oversee white-ball cricket, including One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), while Gillespie will take charge of red-ball cricket, focusing on Test matches.

The appointment of the new coaches comes after an extensive recruitment process and is set for a two-year term. They will guide the national side in preparation for upcoming international fixtures.

Kirsten’s tenure will commence with the England tour in May, starting with a four-match T20I series. Gillespie will lead the team during the Bangladesh series in August, featuring a two-Test series.

Assistant coach Azhar Mahmood will support both head coaches across all formats, providing his expertise to the national team.

Chairman Naqvi expressed confidence in the appointments, highlighting the coaches’ experience and success. He emphasized their role in elevating the team’s performance across all formats.

Both Kirsten and Gillespie expressed their excitement and commitment to their respective roles. Kirsten aims to unite the team and achieve success in limited-overs cricket, while Gillespie focuses on winning Tests and developing players.

Gillespie, a former Australian fast bowler, brings extensive coaching experience, having led Yorkshire to two County Championship titles and coached various teams internationally.

Kirsten, a former South African batter, has a decorated coaching career, including leading India to victory in the 2011 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

The head coach position had been vacant since January, with high-profile candidates approached before Kirsten and Gillespie’s appointments.

Overall, the PCB aims to enhance the team’s performance under the guidance of these seasoned coaches, fostering a conducive environment for success in international cricket.
