Babar Azam Addresses Criticism Regarding Hasan Ali’s Inclusion

Pakistan’s white-ball skipper, Babar Azam, addressed concerns surrounding the selection of pace bowler Hasan Ali in the national squad for the forthcoming series against Ireland and England, during the team’s pre-departure press briefing.

Azam responded to the critiques over Hasan Ali’s inclusion, asserting that the pacer was chosen solely as a backup for Haris Rauf.

“For a while now, there have been questions about why Hasan Ali is back. The selectors have clarified that he’s there as a contingency for Haris Rauf,” remarked Azam.

He emphasized that Hasan Ali’s selection wasn’t as a part of the 15-member squad for the World Cup but rather as an experienced backup.

“He’s not part of the 15-member squad [for the World Cup]. It’s important to recognize that he’s a contingency because of his experience,” added Azam.

Azam also highlighted that Hasan Ali’s recall was a collective decision made by the seven-member selection committee.

“It’s not just one person responsible for his selection. Seven selectors were involved in the decision,” Azam concluded.

Wahab Riaz, one of the selectors, echoed Azam’s sentiments during a separate press interaction, reinforcing the decision regarding Hasan Ali’s role as a backup for Haris Rauf.

“Hasan Ali was already in our plans for the T20 World Cup 2024. He is a backup for Haris Rauf, and we have communicated that to him,” stated Riaz.

“If Haris becomes fit before the England series, he will be our primary choice. Otherwise, Hasan Ali will step in.”

Notably, Hasan Ali’s last appearance in T20Is was during Pakistan’s match against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup 2022.
